Alfonso Gomez-Rejon—Me and Earl and the Dying Girl—6/5/2015

Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon worked as personal assistant to Martin Scorsese, Nora Ephron, and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, in the process working closely with Robert De Niro, Thelma Schoonmaker and Nicholas Pileggi. The next step was directing second unit for Ephron, Inarritu, Scorsese, Kevin Macdonald, Ryan Murphy and Ben Affleck, followed by Emmy-nominated work as a TV director, on American Horror Story, Glee, and Red Band Society, for which he directed the pilot. After the straight-to-video slasher The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Gomez-Rejon is enjoying the breakthrough success of his sophomore feature, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the US Dramatic Competition at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. At San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel, Gomez-Rejon told me about directing the film, adapted by Jesse Andrews from his own YA novel, and his own personal connections to the material.
