Hou Hsiao-Hsien—The Assassin—10/12/2015

Critically acclaimed filmmaking master Hou Hsiao-Hsien has made over twenty films, including Flight of the Red Balloon, Three Times, Café Lumière, Flowers of Shanghai, and Goodbye, South, Goodbye. After years of thought and planning, he has at last made a wuxia film, The Assassin. Like most of his films, it has been met with a rapturous reception, including the Best Director award at this year's Cannes Film Festival. I spoke with Hou Hsiao-Hsien at the courtesy of the San Francisco Film Society (presenting Taiwan Film Days) and the Mill Valley Film Festival. Interview conducted at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco, CA on October 12, 2015. Translation by Ginger Wei.
