You are accessing The Batcomputer! A lifelong Batman fanatic, Groucho grew up on a half-century of Batman's comic-book adventures, as well as the 1960s Fox television series, the Columbia serials, and the Warner Brothers feature and animation franchises. Whether you call him the Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader, or the World's Greatest Detective (or one-half of the Dynamic Duo), Batman has endured for nearly 70 years as one of the few superheroic icons with no supernatural powers.
Warner's relaunch of the Batman franchise—Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins—hit regular and IMAX screens on June 15, 2005 and stars Christian Bale as the Dark Knight. In anticipation of the sequel The Dark Knight— which opens July 18, 2008—you'll find below interviews with the director and cast, as well as reviews from the rich and varied history of Batman in film, print, and audio.
The hotly anticipated The Dark Knight also features the final complete performance by Heath Ledger, who died on January 22, 2008 of an accidental drug overdose. Ledger assumes, ferociously, the iconic role of the Joker, Batman's criminally insane nemesis: the film's opening scene (already played on IMAX screens as an extended trailer, and around the web), teaser trailers, and previews confirm that Ledger's performance is another stunner, enough so to inspire early talk of a posthumous Academy Award nomination. Director Christopher Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with brother Jonathan Nolan (Memento), and re-assembled the amazing ensemble of Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. Aaron Eckhart joins the cast as Gotham City D.A. Harvey Dent, and Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over Katie Holmes' role of Rachel Dawes.
As the Joker, Heath Ledger (1979-2008) takes his final bow.
