Imagine Me & You (2006)

94 min. Director: Ol Parker. Cast: Matthew Goode, Piper Perabo, Celia Imrie, Lena Headey, Anthony Head.

The empty-headed Imagine Me & You is a lesbianism-at-first-sight romantic comedy. The entire picture hinges on that first sight, which writer-director Ol Parker frankly botches. Piper Perabo and Matthew Goode play young couple Rachel and Heck. Their wedding day is blotted when Rachel walks down the aisle, catches a glimpse of florist Luce, and instantly falls in love. As convinced as the audience is that this is ridiculous, Rachel gets married anyway, and the next ninety minutes observe the erosion of her marriage and her awkward flirtation with Luce (Lena Headey). Even if one accepts the poorly framed premise, all Parker delivers are soggy jokes and clichéd characters, like Anthony Head's admittedly humorous burnout dad. For a more convincing treatment of essentially the same plot, rent Heights. The best Imagine Me & You can offer, as it bumbles along toward its predictable ending, is sympathy for Goode's sweet-natured cuckold—if that sounds like a lovely evening out, you're welcome to it.
