Disney throws itself a party in
Enchanted, a live-action goof on the studio's storied animated successes. Though she's known to some for her Oscar-nominated role in
Junebug, Amy Adams gives a star-making performance as an animated princess dropped into New York City, where she disrupts the perhaps too-reasonable engagement of a stodgy divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey). A Prince (James Marsden), his Evil Stepmother (Susan Sarandon), and her sniveling henchman (Timothy Spall) also go through the looking glass, along with a squirrel who learns to his chagrin that he can no longer talk. It's all in good fun, with highly amusing new songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz and plenty of family-friendly shtick that won't so much offend adults' intelligence. The filmmakers split the feminist difference by having the pretty princess stay staunchly fashion-conscious but also study feminist pioneers, take up arms to save the day, and start her own business.
