Sometimes all we want from a movie is a good time out, and that's exactly what Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights—Hollywood to the Heartland provides. The documentary/concert film follows Vaughn's 30 day, 30 night American road trip, on which he shared the bill with four hand-picked stand-up comics and some actor buddies. The essentially unknown comics rightly consider the grueling gig the break of a lifetime, and while we get a good taste of the comedy variety show, the film is as much a look into the soul of the entertainer and, in particular, the stand-up comic. We see how the comics are their own worst critics, how their upbringings formed them, and how the profession breeds self-consciousness, anal retention, and anxiety. As Ahmed Ahmed says, "You know comics—we battle depression like nobody's business." But on stage, these guys are in control, delivering good old-fashioned stand-up routines precision-timed with precocious verbal and physical bits.
