I've never done heroin, but heroin addicts say it's always trying to chase the euphoria of that very first hit...For a filmmaker...that first movie is such a grand exhilarating adventure, and you're always just trying to replicate that.

The film's only fatal failing is its inability to make any of the characters seem real. Most of them are downright creepy in their doll-like inexpressiveness.

A worthy cinematic adaptation, with interesting and provocative mythic ideas of its own, and suprisingly lyrical images to match.

Call me a Scrooge, but I'll pass on this synthetic version of that most humanistic of tales.

There's an overabundance of unnecessary concessions to modern taste in this effects-driven, CGI-animated remake, but it moves along pretty nicely—and they haven't broken it.
