Mark Wahlberg follows up his Oscar nomination for The Departed with Shooter, which plays like a lost B-movie that should have starred Michael Biehn or Tom Berenger circa 1983. Wahlberg is Bob Lee Swagger, a military sniper turned backwoods conspiracy theorist. Recruited by government agents to predict the thinking of a would-be presidential assassin, Swagger winds up in a heap of trouble that makes him a fugitive. Shooter's one good twist is given up in the trailers and TV spots, which leaves one good action sequence, thanks to director Antoine Fuqua--and a couple of mediocre ones—surrounded by a lot of fretting about what to do and monologuing about what's wrong with America. Answer: evil politicians.
