Told primarily from the point-of-view of a young man (John Krasinski of
The Office) about to be married,
License to Wed makes hay of male anxieties about love and marriage. Robin Williams plays Reverend Frank, the Patch Adams of pastors, who leads Ben and Sadie (Mandy Moore) through a ruinous marriage prep course. Since
License to Wed is about wronging Ben in every way, Moore's character is an unlikeable script tool who talks but doesn't listen, lacks sympathy for Ben's feelings, takes advantage of his solicitousness, and lacks trust in him. Rev. Frank's insane tests to their relationship (administered alongside creepily ever-present altar boy Josh Flitter) prove they're incompatible and yet, somehow, you know a happy ending's in store.
